New 59 In Town
Got a tip today from a friend who says he spotted a 59 Ply Savoy parked on a street here in Wausau, WI. Needless to say, within an hour I picked him up and went to verify his tip. Street was empty but I noticed an alley in back so we drove in and there it was. In fact the owner and a friend were working on it. Its a 4dr white over grey. The fellow makes frequent trips to California and spotted it at a car show and bought it and had it shipped back here. The body is in very good shape. No rust. Bare bones car, no radio or clock but it does have the "toilet seat" on trunk lid and the anodized center is perfect, no water staining. The valance under front bumper is also perfect. Tail light housings are badly pitted though. So I am no longer "the only 59 in town" anymore. The fellow has a computer but it is out for repair so maybe when he gets it back he will join the site.

A Savoy with the toilet seat!? That's pretty cool.
Could be someone who only bought it for the looks of the car.
Does is have the fullsize hubs?
My Fury is is also a car like that. Almost no options except for power steering, torqueflight, fullsize hubs. Doesn't even have power brakes or back-up lights!

although I am very likely the only 59 Ply in the small town of Sumner, I consider Seattle my home town, and Seattle is huge. I am sure there are other 59 Plyms around, and I try to find them all. There is one being re-built somewhere north of Seattle, but I have been unable (so far) to get the name and address of the guy.

Matthew - yup, its got full sized hub caps. I forgot to mention its a flathead six with a power flite tranny. Sometimes you wonder why people back then didn't order more options. According to my book, backup lights, windshield washer and variable speed wipers came as a group for $24, but you could get just the washers for $10 and variable speed wipers for $6. It lists automatic tilt mirror for $14. Was this the famed Mirromatic I wonder? AC was kind of expensive, $372 for non station wagons and $531 for the wagons. Dual antenna were an amazing $10. You can buy a set today from the guy in Florida for $425. Padded dash for $12. Now its about $400 from Just Dashes (which is going to lead me to another post). Back to the condition of the car again - I can't figure out why the taillight housings are so badly pitted but the center of the sport deck lid had no water staining. This fellow has a number of other cars so I hope he hangs on to the 59. Its nice to have another one in town.
well, I m no metallurgist, but did you say the car spent some time near the NC ocean? It may be a matter of scientific fact that anodized aluminum reacts differently than chromium-plated "pot metal" in the presence of ionized salt...hey, I am reaching here, I have been out of college since 1978, and didn't do so well in organic chemistry..!
Yeah, right okay, I have an 8-yr old talking in my left ear while I try to type this..San Diego is near some ocean, isnt it? I'm pretty sure of it......
I bought a 59 Windsor from a SF man..the car had spent its life in Snta Cruz..boy, was that sheetmetal rusted (though not as bad as the Iowa car I bought)
