another sport fury plaque question
i bought a 59 plymouth 2 door sedan. 361 4 barrel. on the dash there is this plaque that reds " sport fury especially built for_____ by plymouth. look at these pics and tell me what i have here! i understand there were no sport fury sedans. would a dealer have done this? i bought the car for $600.00. it needs alot of work and alot of parts. is this a parts car really or is it too far gone to save? it appears to be all there except for the missing sheetmetal that rusted away!!! besides 361, what would this engine be known as? golden commando? take a look at the pics. thanks, mike in k.c.
now THAT is fascinating! From your pictures, all the dirt and grime makes it look like that plaque was always there!.
As you correctly stated, Sport Furys were the only line that got the "Specially made For" plaque.
It is possible the dealer gave the buyer that plaque, at his request.
It is possible the plaque was taken from a Sport Fury.
It is possible that some owner along the way installed that plaque.
Does the car seem to have other Sport Fury-only options? The only SF ones are the side trim...everything else was an option in all the other lines, steering wheel, fender mirrors, autronic Eye, Day-Night mirror, swivel seats (sure, they would fit a 2 dr post), p/w, p/s, am I missing anything?

okay, I can see the front fenders are rusted thru.
I can see the side trim but I dont have my books in front of me...does look like Savoy, though.
I cant see the tailfins...on the FL site, he says there are medallions there.
If they are SF medallions, I suggest he sell them and the dash plaque and fix up his car as a driver. By the way, is that a 60 Dodge Phoenix 2ht in the backround?
More pictures, please!

59 plymouth questions
the tailfins have a large plymouth emblem on both sides. i would expect to see, savoy, belvedere, plaza instead of just plymouth emblems. based upon what i know about the history of this car, i would say nothing has been done to this car since at least 1975. that is when it parked according to the gentleman i bought it from. here is a little math for you. the man i bought the car from was at least 75 years old or older, and he says the car was purchased it by his father in i believe 1965, and drove it until it was parked near a woods line i 1975. the owner died in 1983 i belive also. so that had to put the fathers age at least 70 back then. i just can't imagine that an older gentleman would arbitrarily put this plaque in the car. the car does have a clock also on the dash, which i have read that came standard on furys. also i got the hood up today finally, it was stuck shut from neglect, but squirted some aerokroil on it and loosened up. the valve covers and breather are gold so i am going to assume it is a golden commando engine. how much HP did the factory claim this motor cmae out with? 290HP, 300HP? i'm gonna have to get under the car today to see all of the rust damage, but i know for sure the rockers, int floor pans, and the eyebrows are very rusted thru. i can make most of the patches here at home. i need a windshield, front valance, and rear bumper. taillight lenses also. try to get more pics up. thanks, mike in k.c.

Well, you've got a Savoy there. In my opinion the plaque wasn't factory installed on yours. Not that it's a Savoy but because the Savoy things on the fin were replaced with Plymouth ones.
The Golden Commando produced 305HP if i'm correct.
A Savoy with a Golden Commando! That must be rare!!

vin plate 59 plymouth
the vin plate that is supposed to be located in the drivers door jamb near the front is missing. i do have a title and it is old! title says car was purchased for $150.00 on 8-16-65 and was titled on 11-7-65. the title has a manufacturers number M233-105891. gosh i hope it wasn't used in a robbery back in the day!!! if that helps, let me know. thanks, mike in k.c.
Re: vin plate 59 plymouth
OK, the "2" means it was built as an 8-cyl (no 318 vs 361 designation), the "3" means it was a Savoy, and the next "3" means it was built in Evansville. According to my parts book, "the last six digits will consist of a six digit sequence number. The sequence numbers will all begin with 100001. Each model series for each car line will begin with sequence 100001." Does that mean this is the 5891 Savoy, or Plymouth? And, the 5891 built overall, or at that plant? Oh, I'm so confused...ilikeplymouth2 wrote: the title has a manufacturers number M233-105891.

Welcome aboard Mike, looks like you have a lot of work ahead, but for a 59 Plymouth its well worth it. As a side note, (I see you're from Kansas City) a couple years ago I drove my Sport Fury from Wisconsin to Shawnee Mission, KS for my son's wedding. A most memorable trip. Just visited again this past Oct. KC seems like a real nice town. John Z
Re: vin plate 59 plymouth
From what i know in my yrs of working at GM,the sequence number is consecutive for the vehicles coming down the line and not by series number,so to me that means that that car was the approximately the 5891 Plymouth built in Evansville in the 1959 model year.Faulkner wrote:OK, the "2" means it was built as an 8-cyl (no 318 vs 361 designation), the "3" means it was a Savoy, and the next "3" means it was built in Evansville. I would imagine Chrysler Corp did that too, my 59 Belvys serial # is M159100559 which tells me that it was made in Windsor Ontario and its a Belvedere 2 dr with a 6 cylinder engine, and by the low sequence number that tells me that it was the 559th Plymouth built in that plant,so my car was probably built in September of 1958.
