tranny buttons removal

Does any one know if the transmission push buttons just snap/pull out to remove them,or is there some trick to it . I don't want to risk breaking something,they seem to be held in well. Thanks Mark P.S. I am taking them out for paint as I have another painter lined up and should be on it when the holidays are over.

Once the faceplate is removed, the buttons should just pull out.
