Best Correct Oil Filters
Best Correct Oil Filters
OK.... OK.... there is probably an easy explanation.
Every time I go into NAPA Auto Parts or any other local Auto Parts store and ask for an oil filter for my 1959 Plymouth the clerk gives me a cannister type filter. I went into NAPA today and ordered a NAPA Gold filter and the clerk gave me a FIL 1076 NAPA Gold Filter which is a cannister type.
The clerk says that both the 318 and the 361 engine uses the Cannister type Oil filter for 1959, 1960 and 1961.... and that is what is in his computer.
So I tell him there is a Purolator Oil Filter Group 7 V1A on the car now.
I tell him that I need a filter such as: WIX 51515 or a NAPA Gold 1515 or a FRAM PH8A or XG8a or a Purolator Group 7 V1A.
The clerk says I am wrong but he will sell me whatever I want. What am I missing here?
Since I have only owned my Plymouth for 15 months and since I am a lifetime Pontiac Guy who knows Poncho V8 engines built from 1957 to 1979....maybe I am dumb when it comes to Mopar.

Larry, read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=115&p=356#p356
I think it has all the info you want to know! As Dick Koch would say: "Use the search in the upper right hand corner!" Lots of stuff here I've long since forgotten about...

Dan,
I thought there must have been a conversion plate put on the engine block.
And I did search the topic but did not find the thread on the conversion kit.
Thanks for clarifying. So I will contnue to use the spin on filters.
I am sure the Mopar community does not think this takes away from originality of the car.

I agree! Certainly, it was good enough for Bob Hinds, who provided those details - and he was the former 1959 Plymouth Advisor for the Plymouth Owners Club.WDJ40 wrote: I am sure the Mopar community does not think this takes away from originality of the car.

Good luck,

Re: Best Correct Oil Filters
Of course it will lose value!
Just kidding!!!! Those canisters are horrible.
Spin ons are so much easier.
Napa is wrong by the way, 318's used the canister but the 361's used a spin on.
