exhaust manifold

exhaust manifold

Hey everyone, I hate to keep pestering but, it looks like I have to replace my exhaust manifolds. Does anyone have any advice? Is there any danger of cracking the engine block or manifold? What do I do if I break off a bolt head etc. etc. My Mechanic doesn't want any part of it.

eroomas2; Your not pestering anyone,this is what this forum is for,the exhaust studs can break trying to get the nuts off,hopefully there is enough left to get A hold of with A pair of vise grips,applying A little heat and some penetrating oil, if not it would need to be drilled out and re- tapped to repair the threads,it is easier to get at it by taking the heads off,but before that you would need to remove the intake manifold/carb remove.The heads are A part of the "rusty" lifter gallery, where the spark plugs go in,basicly the top part of the engine.What is wrong with the exhaust manifolds,cracked,bad gaskets? There is no risk of cracking the engine block or the manifold,just breaking the studs that bolt it to the head. Mark

Thanks Mark, Removing the heads sounds a little daunting to me, I did it years ago to a 65 Econoline but it would be a great way to clean out the rust while I'm at it. Then I might as well change out the head gaskets and resurface the heads. I also would kind of like to put a stock 4 barrel carb on her, I assume I would have to change the intake manifold to do that. Might as well do that to while I have her apart. I'm gonna need more hours in the day.lol Thanks again for all your advise and help.

Sometimes it will help to get the engine to operating temperature and the manifold bolts will loosen easier. You have to keep in mind that the exhaust system will be too hot too touch, though. Always disconnect the headpipe first, otherwise you will have problems getting it loose with the manifold dangling. I have good replacement manifolds if you end up needing either of them.
