REPLACING MOTOR MOUNTS - 318 POLY.

After searching everywhere I could not find the actural procedure to replace the motor mounts. The service manual is also vague. Looking at the canister mounts they are at an angle so it seems taking the nut off the bottom of the rubber mount would not help much, I think they would bind as the engine is lifted. Do you remove the three bolts that attach the canister mounts to the engine?? I know you should remove the distributor before lifting the engine, do you also have to loosen or remove the tranny mount? The only lifting point I can see on the engine is the pully or the front of the pan behing the front crossmember other than lifting it from the top. The very front of the pan is directly above the crossmember. Any and all directions, suggestions, and pitfall would be apppreciated.
Thanks much,
Dick.

Hi Dick,

I have recently put my engine back in and had to remove the rubber mounts a couple of times when I was questioning the alignment of the motor, suprisingly the mounts came out easily without binding. Rather than lifting the whole engine to do both mounts at once, try lifting one side at a time using the opposite mount as a pivot point, this way you can gain extra height clearance for the mount removal, try using a lifting strap from the mount itself if you have an O/Head engine crane. The top section of the frame where the mounts bolt on are slotted as opposed to holes so the thread won't bind when lifting one side at a time. Admittedly I had easy access to the mounts as the front clip is off my car but let us know how you get on, Cheers mate

Thanks Dan - I have the front fenders off the car so no problem there, do I have to worry about twisting forces on the tranny mount and should I loosen the bolt on the opposite side of the engine.
Dick.

Hi Dick,

Yes it probably is a good idea to loosen off the other bolts, as long as you lift from one side only the engine weight will hold it in position, thinking back to when I did this, I only had the rear trans bolts in to find the location and then tightened them down later.
