diff relube

Post by ginog01 »

Hi All,

I finally had a chance to get under the car today and noticed the rear diff does not have a drain plug, it seems to be a solid rear end with small bolts on the front to open the case. Am I missing something? How do you you relplace the Hypoid gear lube ?? Thanks.

Also, I am trying to get the hand brake to work, there seems to be a cable that runs to the tranny and it appears to have too much play to tighten it. I noticed that there is a metal stub at the connection at the handle and connects to a lever at the back of the tranny. How can I shorten the cable or what else can I do to make it work. Thanks! :|

Hi Gino - The differential has a square head pipe plug on the passenger side about half way up. The hole is at the level the gear oil should be, you have to suck the old oil out to change the oil entirely.

The hand brake cable runs to the parking brake drum mounted at the end of the transmission, there is a door at the bottom on the trans side with a cog wheel to adjust the hand brake.

I suggest you get a service manual (57,58) and a supplement for the 59. There are excellent illustrations of all components of your car. ebay always have these manuals up for aution.

Dick.

Okay, I got the plugs for both, the bottom plug was filled with sludge, I found it after cleaning and also found the fill plug.

I only have a question now about the brake cable. There are two nuts that are attached to a swivel arm. I have too much cable to tighten when pulling the brake lever. How do I shorten the cable? I tried to spin the top nut but it spins the bottom nut, If I unscrew it then the cable get's longer. Sounds dumb, but, none the less, not working. Would it be better to remove the cable from the bracket or release frrom the swivel and try to tighten???? yippee!!

It's been a long time (alright never) since I djusted an E-brake cable.
It's very much like a bicycle brake cable, with similar adjustment nuts.
Make sure the parking brake handle is OFF.
The following is copied from the Service Manual:
"The handbrake adjusting nut should be positioned against the cable guide so that the brake operating lever is centered in its normal free play arc.To lock this adjustment, tighten the cable guide clamp securely and then tighten the hand brake cable locknut against the adjusting nut. The cable adjusting nut should be held in place during this operation so that the cable length adjustment is not disturbed."
I will add to this...maybe the shoes are completely shot? Check the linings. :)
Also, there may be an adjustment available at the dash handle.

Gino I can totally relate! I hate written directions...I do much better when I have the parts in hand and can see how they are supposed to work.

Roger,
Yep, I took a 1978 Triumph Spitfire apart , it took me 2.5 yrs to get it together, including painting it my self. This car was very easy to do, the electrical system was a little challenging, but it works and it runs great, little leaky with the fluids. I looked over that shop manual every chance I had to and looked at parts books to see the exploded views which gave me the better idea of how it went together. Here is a picture of the finished product.

Roger,

That is exactly right. Maybe I just speak for myself, I have to be a little crazy to subject myself to the constant quest for answers and hope that the people it is coming from know how to do it. These forums are the best thing ever. It is really great to be able to share information and ask sometimes really dumb questions and not have everyone think your a idiot. I really appreciate all your help over the past couple of weeks since signing up for this forum. Have a great week and hope to talk with you later. Again, thanks for all your help.

i'm probabaly a day late, and dollar short-as usual- check ur lining of couse, if the slack will not come out of cable, we sell at oreilly's, in the "help" section, a small devise that that clamps on the cable and takes some slack out. i tried it on my savoy, but my lining is toast, the rivets r just hanging on by a thread, so it didn't work, but something u may look into all the same. with no parking brake, it's hard to park on hill. i tried just putting it in gear and slowly letting off brake, i about got my eye-teeth shook out. lol  good times..... -jeremy
