59 Mirrors

I am going to start getting some of my chrome replated, and I had a question about my twin strut mirrors. Once the mirror head is separated from the mount, does the mirror itself push forward out of the round part ?. I haven't tried to take it apart yet, but just thought I would ask. I sure don't want to break the mirror, but that part needs redone as well as the base. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Do you have the regular mirrors or the deluxe mirrors?

I am not sure what the difference is between the deluxe and regular mirrors. It does have a shroud or eyebrow over the top of the mirror head.

Can you adjust the driver side mirror from inside?

If so, the glass will come out when you get the screw loose

No, I do not have the remote mirrors that can be adjusted from inside the car

Matthew knows something here that I didn't know. He is saying remote controlled mirrors come apart by unscrewing something.
The "non-remote" mirror glass is glued to the 'action' plate. I have never tried to take one apart, but I would hazard to guess that the glass must be sacrificed to get it out of there. You will be paying $$ to re-chrome the mirror housing (Complicated to polish), so the glass replacement cost is incidental by comparison.
This are only my guesses...the only person I know who had his car mirrors re-plated is Tom Fox. In case he isn't watching this site, I will let him know you are in need of answers.\

Roger,

At the end of the mirror (front if you stand in front of the car) is the bolt (looks like a big screw) in the top housing.
The mirror itself has a piece on it with thread where the bolt holds everything together.
The top round part is hold on the base with 2 small screws.

If you get everything apart you will have 4 pieces:
Glass
Cover for the glass
Base
Round part

Will make some pics of this soon for everyone

This is one thing I never have tried..to disassemble a remote-control mirror.
Thanks for the information, Matthew!
I took my car to a club meeting May 9..nice wather, LOTS of looks and compliments. I brought the car home and took off the drivers side door panel in an attempt to better align the door and vent window frame. I think that the replacement weatherstripping is just too thick to allow for a smooth closure of the door. Frustrating.
Matthew, would a photo or two of my windshield stainless trim help you figure out what the problem is with your dad's car?

Matthew and Roger,

Interesting information on the dismantling of remote mirrors - Thanks.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but here is a short update:

Matthew,
I thought there may have been two differnt windshield rubber parts, but there is only one - I agree with Roger
that the rubber must be stopping the trim from fitting.

Roger,
There are different door rubber parts for convertibles from hardtops/sedans - besides the obvious length - I wonder if there is a thickness difference as well. List is from Andy Bernbaum.

A-319B...Windshield rubber........................................................................ $95.00 /ea.
A-332B...Rear window rubber,8.................................................................. 95.00 /ea.

A-338B...Door weatherstrip, 4-door hardtop............................................. 60.00 /kit
A-339B...Door weatherstrip, convertible..................................................... 35.00/kit
A-340B...Door weatherstrip, 2-door sedan................................................. 42.00 /kit

Thanks,
Curt

Interesting, Curt. Although it is difficult to imagine that the thickness or design of the w/s differed from hardtop to cvt, nevertheless it is worth investigating!
