ball joint removal

I got this note from Daniel Tunell, in Sweden:
Daniel Tunell wrote:I'm working on my '59 now, right now I change the ball joints. But they screw into the control arms! Now i need the special socket to remove them. Do you know any internet side that has them?
I presume Daniel is asking about how to remove them and where to get the removal tool, as well as where to get the ball joints themselves. Any advice? I'll pass along any replies.

Thanks
Dan

Dan, Not recalling the diameter of the upper Ball joint in our 59's, I will look it up in the FM for the size or if someone could actually measuring the ones on the uppper control arms on their car that would help to know which ones to select.

There are many suppliers of these special Sockets. Not all make all the sizes. Snap On, Mac Tool, OTC Inc. and SK all make these special sockets. There may be others too.

Year One Inc. has two in their Catalog, MR48 and MR49. these are the 3/4" size of ball joint head and the 1 15/16" (I know the 1 15/16" one works on my 70 Cuda), but I have yet to do the ones on my own 59 so I am not helpful there. All are for a 3/4" impact or breaker bar set up. I used an impact wrench on mine (70 Cuda) to unscrew it from the A arm. best to heat it up a bit with a propane torch to expand and contract the metal a bit.

OTC Inc. also makes one that is for a 2 9/64th" style head , PN OTC8034 and SK makes one for a 2 1/8" style head. My car is at the body shop so I can not measure the ones I have already installed.

Can someone help out with the size of the Ball joint head so we can narrow it down somewhat. Then we can find out how many vendors may carry that size.

I believe the 1 15/16" is the right size. When I rebuilt my SF front end two years ago, I shopped on line for the socket and found anyone who showed it in their catalog, were out of stock. I ended up borrowing a socket from a body shop where I have done business in the past. Even if you have to rent one it would be quicker and cheaper than buying one. I was all ready to put my new ones in and I only had the borrowed socket for one day.

Thanks, Tom. I'm not sure renting SAE sizes are an option in Sweden, though! Still, I'll pass on the info.

Well, I'm not sure how he knows this -- but Daniels says
the size of the screw is 1 29/32.
Could he be right about that?

I think John Q is correct ON THE 1 15/16"TH SIZE (Only 1/32" off from 1 29/32" since the 70 Cuda has the same upper ball joint (per NAPA)
