horn contact plate
horn contact plate
Found my wheel puller, and popped the steering wheel off faster than you can say "Robert Doucet" The detente on the plunger is fine, and so is the roller wheel; but there's wobble in the contact plate. There's a grommet of some sort between the contact plate and the retainer -- looks like it's cracked and dried out:
Could this be why my horn works intermittently -- the plate often doesn't make contact with the roller?
I guess I should pull off the retainer, before I send to Koch's -- any advice about how to do that? And where can I get a replacement grommet?
Dan

Re: horn contact plate
I am not familiar with many intracacies of our cars, including this one.
It is nice you want to repair this correctly.
I would guess the gasket functions both as an insulator and spacer. If the thing isn't too difficult to disassemble, perhaps Gary Goers has this gasket. If not, can you make one out of rubber stock? I think I have some thick rubber stock laying around.
Maybe you could just wind some string around the gasket, filling in the spaces?
Wish I could help-

Good idea, Roger -- actually, Tom suggested something similar -- use caulk or JB-Weld. I think I'm going to try caulk.rogerh wrote:Maybe you could just wind some string around the gasket, filling in the spaces?
Thanks

Re: horn contact plate
Does anyone know wher to get the horn contact grommet like the one pictured? Mark M
ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE!!!!!
Re: horn contact plate
What do you suppose the function of this gasket (not really a grommet) is?
If I could find no other source (and I doubt you will), I'd get some sheet rubber and make one myself
