No, you don't, on the other side of that hole is a tube about 1-1/4" long that quides the probe into the evaporator coil.

Thanks for that bit of information. As I wrote earlier, my a/c came as parts, shipped from out-of- state..I never saw the parts car, and obviously some parts (such as this "tube") stayed with that car, which no longer exists.
Is the tube closed off at the far end?

when you look at the hole in the evaporator housing you are looking at a metal flange that is part of the tube, the tube on the other end is open and ends right before the fins on the evaporator coil. all the tube does is direct the temberature switch sensor (probe) into the evaporator, i pushed mine as far as it would go.

John (Fins59) here. Sorry guys, I don't check site every day. Don't know too much about the a/c. I take it the evaporator housing thingamagig is under the dash. I will reread these posts and take a look tomorrow (Saturday) and see if I can see what you guys are talking about.

Dick - Looking at my car this morning....I have a little device in engine compartment connected to tubing that comes out of firewall. It says "Thermostat Evaporation Valve". It is yellow in color, circular, about 2" diameter, and has about an 1/8" dia wire coming out of it. Wire is about 12" long and is coiled. At the end appears to be about a 2" long sensor. This device is located just right of the brake booster. It is attached to a copper tubing that runs over to the receiver strainer drier which is up front to right of radiator/condenser.
I don't know if this is what you guys are talking about; doesn't sound like it though. Where is the evaporator housing/door? Under dash or under hood? I don't see anything like that. I got the '59 parts books but can't make out what's what.

Got a question though. On the condenser, in front of radiator, there are two fittings...a lower one and a upper one. On my upper one the tubing is not there... fitting is plugged. Where does that tubing from upper one supposed to run/hook to? I'm thinking compressor (mine is gone, previous owner lost it :( ) There is also a plugged fitting on firewall.

Hey John (Z.)
What's the best way to contact you, if you only visit the site sporadically?
You are correct: the capped lines in your car would have hooked to the missing compressor.
-Our questions were about items found INSIDE the passenger compartment, under the dash..
The first picture posted in this thread is a bit confusing, because it is a view from the engine-side of the firewall. Dick had removed the large black housing covering the heater and evaporator coils. He also removed the coils before taking the photo.

John - My car was factory air conditioned, nothing on the engine side of the firewall is there, the only AC stuff I have is under the dash or in the Plenum box on the outside of the firewall, I'm going to put AC back using a Sanden Compressor and hopefully can get the air distribution system (AC & Heat) working. The door I'm talking about is called the air distribution door. So I'm kinda shootin in the dark but thankfully with rogers help.

John Zastrow was invaluable when I bugged him a few years ago for photos of his car's A/C.
I don't recall how it came to be, but I have seven 4x6 color photos of his car in my possession. Maybe I mailed him a single-use camera?
These pics were taken when he was doing some detailing under the hood.
Dick, do you have the pocket in the RH inner fender where the drier goes?
I believe John stores his car for the Wisconsin winters, so Dick, if you are planning to build up your a/c thru the winter, you will want to collect as much info from JZ fairly soon (before the midwest snow flies). I will probably be giving these seven photos to Ron and Matthew, so they can see how to complete the a/c.
here are the best:. :)

Roger - You must be a computer whiz, posting pics like that. I wish I knew more about that stuff. One of my sons is a computer tech at Sentry Insurance solving computer problems. Think I can get him over here to teach me? One of these days....
Anyway, Roger, you offered to send me a disposable camera at the time but I said it was too much hassle so I just took the pics and sent them to you. Glad to help.
Dick - I do put my car away for the winter but it's easily accessible. I built a new garage about 30 feet from my house so it hibernates there, so if I can be of help anytime, don't hesitate. We all learn that way.
I'll make it a point to check this site daily. Summer time I'm into garden tractor forums (I have 4 tractors) Winter time I'm on Snowmobile froums (I have 3 Arctic Cats) and also woodworking forums in winter. And I'll 'fess up, I'm a Craig's List addict. And then there's the Garage Journal forum. And City-Data.com. You can spend hours on there. Not enough computer hours in the day.
Taking the Sport to a car show tomorrow in Wisconsin Rapids. If you get there early enough you can park your car on a large bridge crossing the Wisconsin River. They have 3 bridges in that town so they can do that.

Roger - Thanks for the pictures, they will be a great help.

John - Thanks for the offer to help. We have a Snowbird friend from Canada that comes down to Florida every winter that has over over 150 cars and 60 8N and 9N tractors that just primarily sit there. We all assume his thrill is in the buying not the having. If I had his money I would at least hire a full time man to keep them all clean and run them monthly. It makes me feel the same way I feel when a 57, 58 or 59 Ply Convt. comes up for sale and I can't afford to buy it. You and every body on the site know the feeling.
Dick.
