Roger that "finned thing" is called a fan clutch, they operate either thermally or hydraucily. My question is how do you get that much clearance between the pully and radiator.

I saw a couple of those devices on ebay. I don't think I have the clearance between the engine and the radiator to install one of those. I think they would solve the problem. How could you tell which one is right for a 59 plymouth?

I think either one would probably work OK, but I would opt for the Hydraulic one rather than having my engine get overly hot before the fan kicks in. But then again there may be some kind of adjustment. Probably an old timer at the local NAPA store has the answer???

A friend of mine runs an auto parts store. I will ask him if he has any recomendations. Do you know what hydraulic part # for the hydraulic fan would work?

When I say hydraulic I mean the operation is similar to a torque converter. The clutch doesn't engage until a certain RPM range is reached then the fan starts to turn.

Yeah. I know what you meant. I just didn't frame my response very good.

they both have a silocone like fluid. the only difference between the two is the thermostat one will totally lock up when over-heats (usually 220), it is the heavier duty of the two. i run one on my olds (chev small block).
if overheating is an issue, u can get a perfomance thermostat, same company makes both for us, murray (brand we carry at oreillys), calls the perfomance one an "ultrastat" it has a larger opening to allow greater volume to pass.
as far as what fan set up will work, u will have to find a fan blade off a junker of some sort, but i can look up fan clutches by application, and pretty sure by dimensions. if anyone doesn't already know/figure it out, I DO WORK IN A PARTS STORE, and i would be happy to try to find something. :) i just need to know clearance, and center-center on the bolts on the waterpump. i would measure batmobile, but alais it is but a six banger. --jeremy
