1/25th Mild Custom Sport Fury HT; It's Finished!

Post by froghawk »

Sadly I don't have a real '59 Sport Fury, but I AM working on rebuilding a model of one! It will be a 1960-period "Mild custom" ("serious" restorers might want to cover your eyes!) panel-painted in a style inspired by pics posted on the web of a ragtop that was custom-painted in Northern California in about 1960. According to the painter of the original car, it was done in "pearl white and candy fuchsia" and the interior was most likely stock, but can't confirm color. So, I'm looking for info stock interior color that'd work with that combo. My alternate plan is to do the custom paint in '59 Plymouth "Mint Green" and "Emerald Green Poly" so I'd also like info on green Sport Fury interiors (Was the vinyl metallic in color or solid?). Also, since my model is a hardtop, I'm wondering if hardtops use the black dash I see in the converts, or was the dash color-keyed to the interior in hardtops? Any info would sure be appreciated! Thanks!

Here's the look I'm going for (from pics posted on the Jalopy Journal H.A.M.B. forum by Rik Hoving)...

The Sport Fury had four interior color options:
Red
Blue
Green
Brown (I think)
I have the color chart around here somewhere, but where?
As for dash pad color, I think black was the most common color, but I think it could be had in the interior vinyl colors.
A definitve answer can be gotten by emailing your question to REMOVE_THIStom.fox@verizon.net

Dan - You can't imagine how much I want to go. I guess I'd better start softening Yvonne up today. Althought sometimes whining a lot helps.

Thanks, Dick. I discovered the pix of your car after I posted. What an outstanding specimen; you're a lucky man! Your photos answer all my questions regarding the red and green interiors and I'll probably be painting the model in green, since I've already got half a dozen models in various shades of red, and just don't see how the stock red Fury interior would work with the "pearl white & candy fuchsia" the original convertible was painted.

Thanks guys, I'll post photos of the model when it's finished.

Regards,
John

Dick, remember to avoid the following blunders (sent to me by John Mahaffey)...
My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, "Do you want to have s..x?" "No," she answered.

I then said, "Is that your final answer?" She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes."

So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."

And that's when the fight started....
**********************

I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?"

It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation.
"Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said.

So I suggested, "How about the kitchen?"

And that's when the fight started....
**********************
Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the
dog, and slipped quietly into the garage.

I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.

The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the
radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed.

I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.'

My loving wife of 10 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?'
& And then the fight started ...

**********************

A man and a woman were asleep like two innocent babies.

Suddenly, at 3 o'clock in the morning, a loud noise came from outside.

The woman, bewildered, jumped up from the bed and yelled at the man 'Holy
Sh*t. That must be my husband!'

So the man jumped out of the bed; scared and naked jumped out the window. He
smashed himself on the ground, ran through a thorn bush and to his car as fast
as he could go.

A few minutes later he returned and went up to the bedroom and screamed at the
woman, 'I AM your husband!'

The woman yelled back, 'Yeah, then why were you running?'

And then the fight started.....

**********************
I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95.

Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95.

I told her the beer would make her look better at night than the cold cream.

And then the fight started....

**********************
A woman was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She was not happy with what she saw and said to her husband, 'I feel
horrible; I look old, fat and ugly.
I really need you to pay me a compliment.'

The husband replies, 'Your eyesight's damn near perfect.'

And then the fight started.....

**********************
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.

"I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please."

He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?""

Nah, she can order for herself."

And then the fight started...

**********************
My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept
staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'

'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

'My God!' said my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

And then the fight started..
**********************

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social
Security.
The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age.
I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.
I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.

The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt.' So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.'

And then the fight started...
**********************

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace
expensive... so, I took her to a gas station.

And then the fight started...

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.

She said, 'I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds.'

I bought her a scale.

And then the fight started...

Johan '59 Sport Fury stripped and rebuilt as a custom-painted, slightly "raked" daily driver circa 1960.

New chrome on bumpers and taillights by Little Motor Kar Co. Modelhaus repro Johan '58 Dodge Lancer caps. Lake pipes from Revell '59 Impala hardtop "customizing kit." Added details include scratch windshield wipers, antenna. Clear portions of steering wheel added from AMT '62 Catalina. Weatherstripping added to side window opening with Evergreen strip. Vent windows replaced using thin PETE clear plastic from egg carton.

Added a 1960 Pennsylvania license plate with the same registration code as the car that inspired the build, a Sport Fury ragtop painted in northern California in about 1960 by Jim Roten.

John,

All I can say is WOW!

You may not have a real '59 but you certainly have the next best thing!

Do you customize full size cars or at least get to custom paint graphics, scallops or pinstripes on full size cars?

I know Dick wants your model in the worst kind of way.

I agree with you - his car is my favorite - can't beat that color combination - I want to see it in person some day!

Great work.

Curt

Thanks, Curt!

The '59 Sport Fury has always been one of my favorite cars since I was a little kid. A guy in our development had a pale blue one for a long time that he took a lot of pride in and always drove fast (much to my mother's chagrin). He had glasspacks on it and it sounded really cool, and I remember waiting on our front porch in the evening waiting for him too turn onto our street and drive past our house on his way home from work.

I'm glad to see so many great survivors, drivers and restorations on this site. The pics of Dick's green Fury (along with the shots of the ragtop Jim Roten painted in 1960) were invaluable in giving me the juice to do this build. While my mix for the Emerald Green came out a little dark and I wound up using Tamiya Light Green instead of '59 Mint Green for the second color, I'm pretty happy with way it turned out.
