Steering box rebuild

We are a small group, but we try harder! I think John Fowlie of Big M is a real treasure...not only does he have many parts cars, he also has his own '59 Plymouth, AND he is a skilled mehanic/bodyman.
I can understand your hesitation...not wanting to go thru the trouble of installing a "used" gear in your car. I am willing to make phone calls and place e-mails to US companies looking for NOS parts, if it helps you guys.

Roger, If you have some time to make a few calls that would be awesome, the time difference to over here kills me for that sort of thing, I have to rely mostly on email and some nights I don't turn my CPU on because I'm working on the car! .....mmmm.... need more hours in the day or a win in lotto so that I can concentrate on my true passion, bringing my Fury back to live another day!
I need the worm gear for manual steering, if it comes attached to the shaft thats cool but definitely need the worm, check out the photo, you can see why! I would even consider a used part if it is in good condition.

That's one messed up gear!
I spoke to "Greg" at Collectors Auto Supply* today (Sept 1). Yes, he has a good supply of NOS worm-and-shafts @ $350 each. He also said he has "used" ones. (So probably does John Fowlie at Big M). I did not inquire about them. I was using a cellphone and the connection was not very good.
He said the worm IS detachable from the shaft, but that the worm gear is probably $250 by itself. I did not get a part number or availablity on worm alone.
He could not estimate a shipping cost to Australia, and said there would be duty tax to pay.
He said he has no e-mail waiting in his Inbox, so you must have written to Jim himself...Jim gets hundreds of emails daily.

Yes mate happy to report that I have purchased one from auto collectors supplies, just waiting for it to arrive. Thanks for your help and support with this.
Sorry I haven't got back to you earlier, I have been travelling with work and couldn't post replys for some reason? Let me say though,it was not what I would call a cheap exercise getting this part but I guess had I not pulled the box down in the first place and discovered the problem it may well have cost a lot more someday if she had run off the road! Interesting to note that on the auto collectors website when they show a listing of parts with a qty of 22, it actually means that they dont have any stock maybe its just to trick us all into thinking that the parts for our cars are readily available
I will let you know when it arrives and how it all works out.......Cheers

That's good news and bad news- did Collectors Choice give a reason why they say they have stock on hand when in fact they don't? Where did you finally find the part? What did it cost?
I feel badly for leading you to this company; I will hesitate to recommend them again.

Roger, don't feel bad, I actually got the part through Collectors auto supply they were good to deal with! they have a couple of warehouses so it takes them a little time to get back to you from enquiry.....not sure how there parts qty works but it does seem a bit confusing? The new worm gear and shaft ended up costing me $350 Ouch!! but as you can see from my earlier photo I needed to do something and in the end I was just happy to be able to get a brand new one. Thanks again for your help in tracking them down and the phone calls!!

Yes, that was the price they listed. I am happy they produced teh part w/o problems. I can overlook the "in stock " tally, as long as they deliver promptly.
I looked into the other source mentioned on this thread...they had power steering parts listed, but no manual steering parts, so it seems you were fortunate to get your (pricey)part in NEW condtion. I bet John Fowlie had a good used one for you, but now you are set.
