1959 fury Sport value

Post by garry »

I have what I think is a 1959 Plymouth Fury Sport. The vin # is M294101671 on title. It is complete, but needs restoring. Also have a 1957 Belvedere restored fat block 318. What are they worth? Can e-mail me garry@peoplescom.net

M294 is a 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury, manufactured in Los Angeles.
Your description is rather vague, so my answer will be too!
Rust is usually the problem with these cars.
Does the Sport Fury still have floors? If it stayed in So. Calif. away from the ocean air all its' life, it might have minimal rust.
If it's minimal rust and complete, needing a complete restoration, I'd guess 3500-5000.
Restorations get more expensive every year. A correct interior will cost 5K+. A decent paint job 5K, rust repair not included. New windshields are 800+. Engine rebuilds range from 2-4K. Then tires, brakes, you get the idea.
Google Old Car Price Guide.
The 57 Belv...it sounds like you have just the 318 engine. Or do you have the entire car?
There are folks turning these cars into clones of Steven King's Christine (which was a '58).

I checked the engine out on the 1959 Sport Fury. It looks like a 318 4 barrel carb. Red air cleaner. Looks like torgueflight push button tranny on left side (like 4 buttons I did see 1 or 2 on them). Also has looks like bench seats with fold up middle. Floor pans are rusty but solid.

Ah, Texas cars. Well, the rust-out issue may not be there after all :)
The 318 4 barrel Sport Fury was the standard issue. (The 361 4-barrel was optional.)
The bench seat is actually swivel bucket seats, if you indeed have the stock set-up with fold-down center armrest. Look for a lever at the side which releases the lock and allows the person to swivel his seat, easing entry into and exit from vehicle. A cool, one-year-only feature.
The "2" and "1" indicates the car has 3-speed Torqueflite. Sounds very much like a standard issue SF, with the bonus of having solid floors, and being complete.
We don't deal much with the other years of Plymouth cars...there are sites specifically for 57 and 58 Plymouths...they might be listed on this site under LInks, or you can certainly Google for them.

How can you tell if it is a 361? I was told it was the bigger engine. The tags or plates have been removed. The engine just looks bigger or are they the same block. Distributor is in the rear. The motor valve covers are design shaped with creases in them. Red air breather.

Distributor back by firewall=318 wide block (polyspherical head)
Distributor up front = 361.

On the 1959 Sport there is an unusual weird shaped thing mouted on the dash just above the steering wheel. It looks like a side mirror botton stand with a cylinder made on top looking through the windshield or facing to front to back. It is chrome looking with a black round plastic front. It looks like a sensor or something. Sorry for the description . Will check it out in better light. Can anyone tell me what it is?

utterly useless. Of no value. send it to me.
Ok, I'm lying, your car has a rare (for Plymouth) Autronic Eye, a sensor hooked into the headlight circuit. When an oncoming car's headlights strike it, the sensor automatically dims your headlights to low beam (if they were on High Beam). It was common on Imperials and Lincolns of the day. The sensor is not too hard to find, but the base you have is unique to Plymouths. Congratulations!

The automatic Beam Changer was a $48.50 option.
For $86.50 you could get the Golden Commando 361 with 4 barrel.
Now you know why they are rare in the Economy Plymouth line.

Hey guys ready to talk. This is a pretty Kool car. Needs a lot of work. Pans are good some rust. Interior there but rotted. Hub caps there. Glass all good. Chrome good. Bumpers still fair chrome. Don't know much about them but seems like the 59 had a lot of innovations for it's time. I will try to get some pics.

Garry has been thwarted by the un-ending rain Texas has been getting.
I am looking forward to seeing his two new cars...
