It sucks that it won't suck
OK, I'm confused about the vacuum advance vacuum. Despite the other changes that I've made -- if I remove the hose from the vac chamber, I feel only the slightest vacuum at idle. When I give it some gas -- it gets stronger. That's the exact opposite of what the book says should happen; and indeed, I can hear the "whoosh" when I pull the plug in the intake manifold at idle. Why would the carb port be acting in reverse?
I could almost rationalize it, by observing that the vac tube from the carb is at a point in the carb body above the lower butterfly valves; and that by accelerating, you open up the carb body to vacuum. No? At any rate, that's backwards from what the book says. So I guess it's time for me to take the carb off and see if something's blocking the passageway.

OK, now that I have the carb off -- I can see that there's a tunnel from the tube fitting to a point below the lower valve plates. But, that ain't why I'm losing suction.Faulkner wrote:I could almost rationalize it, by observing that the vac tube from the carb is at a point in the carb body above the lower butterfly valves...
It's the silly carb gasket. The old one was reused when the block was swapped, and now it's good for nothing. That's the source of my vacuum leak.
And now that I have it off -- and, I'm running out of time -- I'm going to cut to the chase and take it to a carb rebuilder, instead of rebuilding it myself. Same day service; $140. Time is money, especially when you're TWSAM.
Now to torque those other bolts, with the carb off. Anyone interested in a Carter AFB acceleration pump kit?

Good thing I did, too. I thought one of the four bordering the carb was tight enough, and I hand tightened the other three; but all four were still under 30 ft-lbs.Faulkner wrote:Now to torque those other bolts, with the carb off.
