Missing body tag

Post by big m »

Here is the dilemna- A friend of mine found a Sport Fury convertible, rusty but fairly complete. The body tag [VIN] on the left door jamb is missing. The car is less than 1000.00, so I figure it is worth the money if only for parts. I would like to restore the car, however. Is the Vin # the same as the frame #?, or is there any other way to determine what the vin is so a replacement tag can be made? There is no title, and any paperwork was lost years ago when the car was put out to pasture. Any ideas guys? ---John

John,
Many of the 59's did not come with a door jam tag, it seems to depend on were they were assembled.. Look on the firewall near the brake booster on the cowl, here again some will have an aluminum tag ,others will have only the typical steel plate with the body info paint, trim, D.O.B. Vin#,ect, ect... From what I understand the frame is also stamped, if memory serves it is on the drivers side rear somwhere..

Thanks, Brad, I didn't even think of that possibility. Most of the '59's I have out here have the vin in the left door jamb, but this particular ragtop is in upstate NY, so it was ;probably from an eastern assembly plant. ---John
