Needing antennas, or got an old one that's unusable?

Post by batmobile »

Anybody wanna take a stab at repro'ing these antenna bases? Damn things are going for a fortune these days...I just want a pair for my '58 but don't want to pay through my ass for them.

i'm looking for a pair for my '59. the only ones i see on ebay r junk , and even at that r going for a couple of benjamins. i wouldn't mind paying a little of my hard earned dough for some re-pops. couldn't a person make a casting of one of the originals, and make the bases pretty cheap? what about being able to attach aftermarket power antennas to the base? i think that is possible, what does everyone else think? does anyone know of a shop that can handle something like this, that's fairly priced?--j

casting has come along way over the years. investment casting seems to be a popular method and very reasonable! www.backyardmetalcasting.com with a little trial and error, i bet it could be done.

take that one step farther and use some recycled beer cans. don't know how many it would take, but would be pretty cheap to start out. take a flower pot base, either use charcoal or set it up for propane. use some recycled cast iron pipe for the stock to pore into. some clay-e sand (abundent in good 'ol Oklahoma) for the molds. make it solid, and just drill the hole through the center, and drill and tap a couple of holes for the studs to go in. then just polish it out (and chrome it of course). the only thing that would be hard to get hands on is a genuine antenna to use for molds. i believe they r the same on both sides, right if no one else is willing to do it, i'll give it a stab later this spring when i get back to dodge. anybody got an old original willing to donate, no damage will be done to the original, sand will be packed around it, that's it. i would prefer one that was just the base, but hey, beggars can't be chosers. whoever donates the original, if i can get this to work, will get a pair of repops for no charge (probably unchromed, but i'll see what kinda price i can get). not sure what total cost would be, have to try it out first, but it would be CHEAP! how's it sound?--jeremy

Jeremy - You sound like you might have enough beer cans on the floor in the back seat of you car to complete this project. (just kidding).

I know what you mean by a fortune (they cost $485.00 for a pair these days.) Nice repros from the only source, he is in florida. There is a left and right side, the bases are thicker on one side so they sit straight. Even when a nice set shows up on e-bay they are a fortune. As far as I can see a ream job from buying a set would be far less painful than trying to reproduce them yourself. Good luck.

i try to keep my car clean, don't need to be sighted for open cantainer. u know what they say, nothin' ventured, nothing gained. and there is no way in heck i would pay anything over a hundred bucks for a decent set. i'll see if i can come up with something, be nice if i could repop them. not only would i have a set, but could help out fellow forward lookers, and maybe, just maybe have a little left over to put in the "save the plymouth fund". hopefully i can find someone with a set that looks bad, but is good enough shape to make molds. i have never seen a set, in person. is it 1 piece or does the antenna rod separate from the base?--j

Jeremy - I don't know if its a one piece or two piece. If you decide to repo them I wish you the best of luck.
