SMS

Post by Faulkner »

Well, I know that Faulkner's seats need to be redone; painting the vinyl came out great, but the same paint on the material stiffened it. On a lark, I contacted SMS for a sample of black and brown material, which would go well with Faulkner's interior.

WOW! $149/yard:

That's about $900 for the cloth alone; then, vinyl, then assembly. And I'd have to come up with buckles for the door panels (I have them for the seats). I'm probably looking at $4-5K when all is said and done, no?

It's hard to justify that expense now that I'm retired, and on a fixed income.

Believe it or not, Ron Murray is still in business! (He's the guy who sold Ron Keij red material for $65/yard; unfortunately, he doesn't have brown.) Ron might be able to do something for me that's not original, but will be tastefully done.

Yikes! Its unfortunate that SMS seems to have cornered the market on this. So many mixed emotions about them when ever a post comes up talking about them. They have a reputation for top quality amazing work but the price and the wait are always a concern. I am in the same boat of some day having to replace the interior in my SF (if i ever get home long enough to work on it) and SMS seems about my only option for a source for the material. I have a very good friend who is a top notch upholster and depending on his wait list i might see if he can put it together. Did they give you a quote for the vinyl? I requested samples from them about a year or two ago but they are buried in my storage and darned if i can remember what the prices were. Keep us posted Dan.

after thinking about it for a min and a quick search of my inbox i found a quote from Doug (the main guy at SMS) in an email from 2017. I had asked if they had the green and they did and he gave me the below quote.

"Door panels pre-made are $895.00. Pre-made seat covers are $1500.00. The pre-made carpet set is $259.00."

really kicking my self for not ordering them then.

Hmmm... do you mind forwarding that email to me privately, Will? I’d like to discuss with Doug before I rule it out.

sure thing Dan. What is your email? Just keep in mind I am willing to bet those prices for complete panels have gone up in the last few years. An attachment to that email was an example of a finished panel and it looked nice! I know a fella on FB by the name of Guy who recently sold his SF had SMS do the interior on it in the same colors I need and SMS did an amazing job on it. Not sure what he paid for the entire interior or how long it took. I would be curious to hear what Doug quotes you.

Thanks Will! My name is my address 8) dan at 59plymouth dot net.

I'm only doing it on a lark; while I have seat buckles, I'd have to come up with the ones for the door as well. It looks to me that the buckle itself is the same as on the seat, but the end cap would be trouble. Now, if I were Dieter Bauer, I'd make 'em...

email sent Dan should see it in your inbox.

Those buckles are tough to find and even harder to find in good shape but they do come up for sale from time to time and I am willing to bet there is a member or two here on the forum might have an extra buckle  I have one or two extras that are a little crusty but might be ok if you had them chromed only problem is they are buried in my storage in FL so it will be at least a year till I could get at them. As for the end caps I can not recall ever seeing any for sale but maybe John has some? I bet you could find some thing to act as a suitable replacement for the end cap. Maybe the tip off of a web belt or leather belt might look close enough and could be cut to fit/glued in place, just a thought.
