I received an inquiry from a Plymouth Owners Club member, about an engine being offered for sale. It's got the scalloped valve covers that are the hallmark of Polys - here's the information he emailed:

I've read that the casting number was shared among a number of displacements with the same block - just, different strokes and bores. But I understand from here, that the stamp indicates a '58 318. Does anyone have a differing opinion, or additional information? And, were the Fury 318's, different than the standard 318's in 1958 - and if so, in what way?
BTW - Faulkner's 318, which I bought from eBay represented as a '58 block, is stamped with LP8 + a serial number.
FLP is the prefix for the 1958 Fury A engine. Special Fury 318 engine included re-curved dual point distributor, mechanical camshaft and dual four-barrel WCFB carburetors.
Dan: for what it is worth my Fury has the original motor and I think the car was made in June 59. The left side stamp is MP8326478 the casting # on the other side reads 737929 with A #2 above the numbers. I did not see A #1 starting at the beginning. Mine is the 318 with 2 barrel. Mark

Thanks, Rick - and apparently also a higher compression - 9.25:1 (according to the POC member who contacted me, but also corroborated by Bernie Brouillet). The "F" in the "FLP" is the difference.
