Correct stop light bulbs

Post by 4dHT »

Hello all: Forgive my innocence, what bulbs are correct for the stop lights(white) in the tail lights? The shop manual lighting chapter chart gives
1073, but the small chart in the lub. diagram at the end of the suppl. 59
manual gives 1141 (This was also given as the correct # in 57s and 58s.)
??? Beth :)

Interesting, Beth! You have eagle eyes!
I must say I never noticed that small chart on p. 78 of the '59 Supplement, however my feeling is that small chart is a "left-over" from 57-58 and not exactly right for our '59s. I feel the full-page chart on p. 72 was written "new" for the '59 models.
One could check with the Auto parts store to find out the wattage of each bulb, and also the actual glass size of each, and then I'd use the lesser/smaller of the two, reason being I've seen the higher wattage bulbs melt lenses. I don't know what the 1141 looks like, or if it is readily available.

I use 67 for Directional, 1073 for Reverse, and 1034 for Stop/Tail.

reverse lights

Post by 4dHT »

:) Sorry if I confused anybody with wordage. I meant the white (reverse)
lenses and their bulbs. I have 1034, 1073, and 67 right now, ( I forget order without car in front of me) and the 1073s are loose. I have rear turn signals and red tail lights both sides, but no reverse lights. I am also getting no brake lights, which I know is a different issue. (Prob. switch under master cylinder)That is why I asked, also my previous owner had messed with stuff, I wasn't sure that the bulbs in place were original. They were marked 1073 ge. One was corroded bad and was very difficult to remove. The owner's manaul says 1034! Also 67 bulb s have 1 contact? (whatever you call small circle on back)1073/1034 have 2. The middle socket looks like it would accept 1 socket not 2 in the big parts
book diagram. oh well, I'll find out when I get Wanda back. The 1141 bulbs are the same size as the 1073/1034, with 1 contact.
This isn't supposed to be rocket science, I hope! Car wiring is not fun. Beth.

Beth,
The center spot of the taillight pod is the Reverse Light. The bulb that fits best there is the 1073, a small-sized single filament (single contact) bulb which won't get hot enough to melt your Reverse lenses.
Most bulbs you see are single filament bulbs. With automobiles, however, some bulbs might have two filaments. This allows one area of the taillight pod to perform more than one function. For example, you can have the taillights on, then when the brakes are applied the second filament lights up, making that area brighter. Same with turn signals. I hope I am making sense!
If your reverse lights don't work, first make sure the bulbs are good (good filaments, no corrosion). Since the rest of the taillights work, they probably have good Grounding. So the problem would be in the switch or the power supply. The reverse lights get their power under the dash via a single white wire. Trace it from the switch which is on the pushbutton module...

used to work at O'reilly auto parts in OK. the bulbs if like sized and same number of philimints(sp?), then for wattage go by bulb number. bigger the number, higher the watts.
