Turn signal assembly
Turn signal assembly
Does anyone have a picture blowup of how the turn signal should be put togeather in the steering colum. I have the 57/58 service manual and cannot find anything on the turn signals and how they should be correctly installed in the colum ( where the springs and parts go ). I have a 59 Belvedere.

Dennis,
I do have a picture I took when I mounted my restored steering wheel.
Hope it helps, otherwise Roger gets a shot. I can also make pictures of matthew's steering column.
Also tried to e-mail you and send the large version of the picture but the e-mail was rejected.

Actually, for those responding to Dennis' inquiry, and got bounces -- it appears he entered his email address incorrectly in his post. My correspondence with him indicates his address is balloon@lakeozarks.com. Take that our for a spin, if you want to contact him directly...

turn signal and brake lights
Thank you for the picture. It solved one of my problems, which was how the spring on the right side of the picture when on. There are a couple of other issuses. I have a piece of brass approximately a 1/4" wide and 3/4" to 7/8" long and bent that goes somewhere under the turn signal mechinism. I would like to find an exploded view of the turn signal switch area. This all started because my brake lights quit and I have traced it to the turn signal switch area. Brake light switch works, but nothing at the rear of the car. The Turn signals work fine. The turn signals will not stay detented when making a turn. I don't know if they ever produced a exploded view of that area of the steering colum. Any help would be welcomed.

Do you also have a wiring diagram? The turn signal does interrupt the brake light connection (when the brake lights are on and you activate the signal, one of the lights will begin to blink, as with any car). There are wiring diagrams in the 59 supplement. You may have a bad turnsignal relay..but first we have to get your assembley re-assembled. Hopefully I can get your answer this afternoon (Wednesday)after 5 pm west coast time.
Roger offers this advice (and pic) to Dennis:

Here is how I believe the turn signal switch contact should fit. Make sure all surfaces are clean..this is how Ground is maintained with these moveable parts. Let me know how it works out. I can copy the wiring diagram from the manual as well, if needed.
