broken dip stick tube

Post by eroomas »

Apparently a previous owner had JB welded the dip stick tube to the engine block, it was broken off at the base. I noticed this when it fell off while working on the engine. Unfortunately the section of tube that is still in the block is quite content with staying put. I've tried taping with a screw driver and pulling with needle nose pliers. I've tried cutting into it with a drill bit and pulling, I've tried using an easy out, all to no avail. Has anybody ever encountered this before? I really would rather not have to lift the motor and drop the oil pan.

Try threading a large sheetmetal screw into the broken dipstick, or a small lag bolt. Then clamp vicegrips onto the bolt and tap the vicegrips upward with a hammer. If it still won't budge, it is best to knock the broken piece down into the pan, where it will remain on the bottom harmlessly.

Thanks John, I was wondering if the magnet in the oil pan would hold it. That's very helpful
