Glove box removal

Post by 58 coronet »

My glove box was in poor condition and after removal to work on the heater and heater control it was even poorer. What is procedure to removing and installing the glove box. It seems the glove box can't be removed with the heater in place and the heater can't be removed with glove box installed. It seems like a dumb question. Surly the dash doesn't have to come out. John

John - I know what you are talking about. Getting to the heater valve is a bitch without taking the glove box out, and doing that almost destroys the glove box. I'm talking about a NEW box, an old one is toast. I haven't done it yet but I have thought about lowering the dash BUT you will need a helper for this and its way to complicated and easier to just buy a new glove box. Your have to lower the steering wheel, remove the inner garnish moulding around the windshield, remove the screws holding the dash to the firewall, loosen the two side bolts and any other thing that may surface. Then have your friend hold the dash or rest it on something until you get the box out BUT I will bet you some wires won't let you lower it enough and on and on and on.

OR you can do it the easy and cheaper way.

1. Rip you current box out.
2. Fix the heater valve.
3. Install the NEW glove box.

Now there, wasn't that easy.
Hope I helped.
Dick.

Hi Dick Does that mean a new box will somehow go back in easier than the old one. I repaired the old one and reinstalled it and in doing so pretty much destroyed it. A new one will cost me about 100.00 by the time I get it and if I go that route I want to avoid destroying it. I am going to try to drop the heater some, install the glove box, then reinstall the bolts holding the heater. Will it work in that order? Thanks for any help. John

John - You are right a new box doesn't go in any easier and still gets beat up pretty good. I used black duck tape and flat black spray paint to pretty it up a little. Then I closed the Glove Box door and try to open it as little as possible, after all I'm the only one locally that knows how it really is. Dropping the heater box / fan assy is a good idea provided there is some room between the fan housing and rear of glove box. Let us know how that works out.
Dick.

This simple job is getting more and more complicated. I initially had the glove box and heater out to repair the cardboard parts of the heater. I never did anything to the heater water control valve. It wasn't leaking. It should be done as well, while I can get at it. Napa in Canada does not have the kit and can't get it. Napa USA won't ship to me in Canada. What to do??? Time to go to the shop and try "something". John

Hi I could not get the heater out without removing the glove box. The bolt and spacer at the top beside the heater control valve was inaccessible for me. I took the glove box out again ,repaired it and reinstalled it. I found that the glove box wants to catch on all the heater box irregularities ,shafts etc on removal and install. It was a great help to put a smooth surface (I used a piece of sheet metal) between them. That way the glove box can slide up or down without catching and pocking holes . It is still very tight but you just work it in slowly concetrating on the spot that is the tightest and working your way a little at a time. I was able to get the glove box back in with no damage and would now not be too concerned about damaging a new one when and if I get one.
Thanks for the leads on the new glove box and the heater control repair. I would still like to repair the control valve myself. The kit is inexpensive(10.00 or less). If anyone has a napa nearby and could get one(I would take more than one) and ship it to me that would be great. I would pay them in advance . I sure would like to have a spare and one for another car I am working on. John
