318 EXHAUST MANIFOLD CLIMATE CONTROL

Post by Mark Merritt »

Hello; I am wondering if I have a missing part,or the purpose of the 2 pegs opposite the bi-metal climate control device.I have posted pics, the posts have grooves in them, one post is bigger than the other.Possibly for some kind of spring or clip? The flap seems to function ok,I removed the exhaust manifolds and glass beaded them, they cleaned up nicely. It just looks like it is not all there, anyone else know if they have these "posts". Thanks Mark

Mark; You are missing the anti rattle spring clip, it kind of looks like a cut and bent safety pin I will see if I can find an example.

If my memory serves me correctly:
The exhaust manifold came with a thermostatic-spring, a counter-weight, and a flapper. When cold, the spring closed the flapper, which deflected the exhaust gasses from one side, thru the intake manifold passages and across to the other exhaust manifold. The purpose of this was to heat up the intake manifold as soon as possible, activating the choke pull-off, and improving fuel economy.
You are only missing a spring-clip/retaining clip which keeps the shaft centered in the opening.
That peg is the "stop" for the counter-weight.
