how do i remove a crankshaft pully
how do i remove a crankshaft pully
Im trying to replace a crankshaft pulley on my 59 Plymouth belvedere 318 when i bought it it had a single belt pulley and im trying to replace it with a double and having a hard time taking it off i tried everything. Does the damper twist off after the bolt comes off. Any advice
Re: how do i remove a crankshaft pully
Once the crankshaft bolt has been removed, usually a few taps with a rubber mallet will remove the balancer. These are not a press fit like some car makes use. I have run into ones that were installed with a sealer on them, and they do not budge as easily.

Thanks ive tried hitting it with a mallet and wont budge . How would i remove the sealer. Would the pulley be screwed on some how.
Re: how do i remove a crankshaft pully
The balancer is not screwed on, it is held in place solely by the large [1 1/4" head] bolt on the crankshaft. A key and slot keep it from rotating on the crankshaft. You could try using a large 3-jaw puller, but carefully, as you could ruin the balancer.

I tried that too the pulley came on the car looking like someone had tried the same thing. I keep spraying it down and use a jaw puller and it still wont budge. I was wondering if the pulley would possibly screw on or what else i could do thanks for the advice

Martin, John F. at Big M is spot on once the large dampener bolt has been removed a know with a hammer should have done it. You might the area with a rust penetrator and then the hammer again, or even a small propane torch to heat up and allow the two pulley metal to expand to break whatever seal is holding it still on.
Can you take a picture of it head on so we can see if there is anything else interfering. John F (Big M) has some additional pulleys if you end up destroying yours in the removal process.
