Master cylinder Help!!!!
Master cylinder Help!!!!
Ok guys HELP!!! Bought a new MC. Have to reuse the brake push rod. Ok, how in the H#@ll do you get the push rod out of the piston. I read that if replaced, the piston is not servicable. New MC has the new boot and piston in it. Do I use brute force and ignorance to extract the rod from the piston, or is there a secret.
Thanks all

Re: Master cylinder Help!!!!
Rob; I really haven't had too much experience with the stuck push rod, I usually pull on the brake pedal ( brute force ) then I unbolt the cylinder from the firewall. If you have power brakes, be carefull, pull about a 1/4 inch and loosen the cylinder and shim between the cylinder and the firewall with hard washers and other type spacer and go for another small amount, this should be enough to remove the cylinder.

Thanks RickyMopar. It is a manual brake MC. I kinda thought BFI is what is needed. Raining this morning. Good day to clean out the gas tank and extract that darn rod out of that darn piston .

Rob - The end of the pushrod has a flat type o-ring around the rod and I assume it's to prevent the rod from rattling around or to keep it from falling out. To get the pushrod out place the MC in a vise, place a screwdriver or round rod of some kind in the hole and pull like hell. You can also strike the "rod" with a hammer if necessary, it will come out. Just make sure the o-ring is on the rod when you put it back in. One time the O-ring was damaged very badly, I went to several brake repair shops and found a replacement.

Great, O ring eh. I was hoping for a raised lip of some sort in there, for a pressed type fit. Not an O ring. Cause ya know, I did not get a new one with the rebuilt MC I got. I will be heading over to my buddys shop with all the big mean tools to get that rod out. I'll post an update. Hopefully no emergency room visit is needed.

Oh yea, there was an O ring. And ofcourse, not in good shape. But I think it is there more as a retainer than to provide any other purpose. I think there is more than enough to hold it in there, especially seeing I could not get it out. I ended up putting the piston in drill press and slowly opened it up and then tapped, I mean, HAMMERED it out. I tried a slide mammer first, then some other forms of BFI. Note, drillin' was last resort. Off to shake the gas tank. Hockey game in 2 hours. Go WINGS!!
