Ratchet man, that sounds like a busted cable inside the metal sprial bound sheath, or like others have said, it was unscrewed from the Speed-o-meter and the open tang is just spinning around banging into things...

I just moved from Granby Ct to Woodbury Ct and have a 1959 SF Conv.under Resto( See Post),Small world
I have some spare parts incl a Good running 318 I took out of my car,It has a 4 BBl carb now ,However it a orig 2 X 4 4bbl Carb Motor.I have all the 2x4 setup in a Box If your interrested.
I would like to come by sometime in the spring to see your car and take some orig Photos .
