59 Plymouth Jack
59 Plymouth Jack
I have a 59 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible and a Sport Fury hardtop. The 2 cars came with different jacks. Can someone take a picture of the proper jack with base and handle that is correct for the 1959 Plymouth. I have some service manuals, but I did not see a picture in there, and my owners manual is missing at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Tim, I don't have an exact 59 Jack assembly for our 59's either but if you go to the Showcase and under Sport Fury, the first page, click and look at Ed Eckersons jack that he has laying in his trunk.
That solid mast jack and long bumper hook are exactly what is depicted on the Trunk Decal I just recieved from Gary Goers last week. It is very similar to a C body jack, hook and stand I have from a late 60's C Body Chrysler. Similar solid mast jack and the long curved hook too! The base I have is more of a rectangular base and I believe that the original base was square in shape. But they are very similar.
Some of the more senior members of the forum can jump in and correct me if I am way off base. I am not an expert and am trying to get some of the vast knowledge out there from people who have been doing this 59 Plymouth stuff a lot longer then I have.
Let me see if I can provide a link to that page for you that would be quicker to obtain the right page.

Hope this helps....

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Just went out and checked the jack in my SF. I have the rectangular base, hollow mast, short curved hook, and I have the longer jack handle. Which type is correct? I don't know. Maybe both are. Maybe certain factories had one type and another factory had the other. I keep all that stuff secured under the spare tire. Except the jack stand base....that is under the big wing nut holding down the spare tire.
John Q - I kinda assumed the '59's did not come with a trunk decal so am curious???? But then again most of my assumptions are wrong....like the time I assumed that semi was going to stop for that yield sign but didn't and plowed into the side of my Dodge van
Thanks for the Ed Eckerson link...somehow I missed that when it came out. Last time I looked I think he just had the 361 engine page on, and not the car.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Dick, I will scan the Trunk sticker that I purchased from Gary Goers, it has a P-19021 part number on the bottom of the decal just like the Dodge and Chrysler ones would have their own specific Decal ID number, The picture shows the front and rear of a 1959 Plymouth (and it looks like the much preferred Belvedere trim on it too! LOL)
I know Chrysler used the tri-Y shapped solid mast till 1970 (my 70 Cuda has a solid mast) and in 1971 they went to the hollow style (a 71 Cuda convert I had had the hollow style mast) . The base would also have the tri-Y shape also. Does your base have a single cutout in it for the same shape as the jack mast?
By no means am I an expert on this Jack stand issue. I will ramble on down to the Mopar Grotto (basement) and take a picture of what I have and will use on my Car.
Be back in a few mins.....
here you go with the pictures! Dick, The A bodies of late 60's and early 70's and the E bodies had a short curved Hook that mates to this same style of Jack mast. Ed's long Hook is what I have that came off of a late 60's C body Chrysler. It is close enough for me.
The Hook in the Goers decal depicts it as a longer hook style rather then the short hook you might have. The E-body one I have I will take a picture of too in the next few mins. and will show also.
Can you take a picture of your Hook and base so I can see it. I am quite versered on E-body type of cars having owned 8 of them over the years.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
By golly I guess there is a trunk decal for the '59's. But what's that '58 trim doing on top of those '59 fenders. Was reading an old car mag awhile back and I think it was Tom Cahill that called these "cheese cutters".
I looked in both my SF trunk and 4-dr Fury trunk and neither one has a hold down bracket as shown on decal on the right side to secure the jack. That is a good place for it though.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
John Z. I saw the larger shark fin 58 Trim on the top of the fenders too, but that kinda falls in line with the Factory service parts manual depiction of the same 58 shark fins on upper fender in the body moulding drawings on page23AI,23AJ & 23ALin my 59 Plymouth Parts Number manual. My manual has a publish date of October 27.1958. The design of the jack/torage decal diagram was drawn about the same time when they thought they would carry into the 59 model year the old 58 fender fins.
Location is still up in the air about whether it should be on the underside of the trunk lid or applied to the trunk Cardboard area to the left of the spare tire. I have seen people at shows put it in both places. I don't know what is right or wrong location to have it. Need some guidence here on that point...
I believe in the 59 Plymouth accessory manual, (the after sale dress up items) Shows the dealer added upper top fender trim is a slimmer lower profile style one could add for 59 glitz. I believe I have a set of those, but have not drilled the holes in my fender to mount them yet. They have a part number of #2082869 . I Just hesitate to add these on. Not that they are are not gaudy but.... Could someone confirm that they are a 59 accessory? I do not have a copy but have browsed thru one once and remember that they were offered.
The countour of the base would seem to work in the double barrel valley of our fenders. They neither cant to the right or the left. I will dig those out and take a picture of them.
Another interesting note is that the Fury trim example (page23AL) in the 59 parts manual shows on the higher quarter panel, the nameplate of a Belvedere. When it is obvious it is the Fury model. Factory Faux Pas with the name plate depiction.
Most have been a Monday morning drawing!!

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Just checked my parts book and you're right....(again ) pics show the fender ornaments on the '59's. Never was aware of that before or else I forgot That would be a rarity I would think...the fender part, not my memory But like you, I wonder if they actually put them on any cars. If I put them on my car I would carry the parts book picture in my trunk, and at car shows you could probably win a few bets with Plymouth guys of that era that would argue that part was a '58 feature.
For example, my buddy has a '71 Dodge Super Bee Charger without the stripe. At car shows he's been questioned by Mopar guys whether his is a true Super Bee because of no stripe. Then he shows them the window sticker that shows "stripe delete" and he wins. (He's the original owner).
Anyway...after intense scrutiny doesn't it appear that the jack mast in your decal is the hollow type and not the T type? Recently in a post Roger H replied to this question and said Tom Fox told him which jack type was correct. I can't find that post though at the moment. On decal location maybe Tom Fox would know for sure or how about the Plymouth Bulletin '59 Plymouth Advisor....Robert Hinds.. Or then again, maybe decal location was plant specific.
I've got a Fury parts car too but haven't checked that trunk yet. Car is stashed out in my woods on a trailer and it's collllld out there today...17 degrees. No snow on the ground yet so it feels like about 0 degrees.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
John Z. The stripe delete code on the 71 Super B would be a either a V8X (side stripe) or V9X (rear end butt stripe) on the fender tag depending on the location of which stripe he is talking about. The V stands for Vinyl, the number after the V is the location of the Vinyl stripe and the X would be for the delete part. Color of a stripe would replace the X for those cars equipped with a stripe. The E & B body codes are what I have been involved in for over 25 years. Two years ago I almost bought a 440 6 pack car for 7K but the owner bailed on me after I gave him a deposit. He was smart, the car is worth over $50 - 70K when restored.
I don't know which one is correct on the 59 jack mast. I would defer to Tom's and Rogers knowledge on those points. I have one of each of those masts, so I can go either way. Once I media blast the right one and paint it up and install it, it will never be used anyhow.
Tom is good friends with Will Eichelburg and he is the original owner of that SF Convert. His car should have the right one in stil in it. But Tom Fand Roger's opinion (and yours) is good enough for me. I am far from any expert on this stuff and am still learning and learning and...
Though my car is not a correct points car, I want as many of the details as possible to be correct. Forget the fact that I have a 413 RB in it, disc brakes (soon to be in it) and a 68 New Yorker seats in it. So I am only destined to be 90% correct.
The Tri-Y jack mast actually goes in my 70 Cuda Convert. So I am glad I can now select the hollow one for my car.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
All I know about '59 Plymouths I learned from Tom Fox When I asked him about correct jacks, he said he had determined the hollow jack post fitted to a square base pad was the correct set-up. ANY complete jack set-up was difficult for me to find (they are one of the first items to disappear in a salvage yard), but I did finally locate one. My car did not have the clamping bracket seen in the jacking sheet. Perhaps it was eliminated from the assembly line after the label was printed; perhaps the bracket installation step was never added to the assembly line.
I would never have used a bumper jack on my car; they scratch and bend the chrome and the bracketry. I carried a bottle jack, but when the brake wheel cylinder failed at the car show last summer, I was very happy when someone loaned me a floor jack (the kind on casters).
Such is my 1959-th post Anything after this will be a post-59 post (and the car will be in new hands by then).
BTW, Blucher does not translate to glue- as wikipedia explains it, the horse was frightened by the mention of her name, implying she had abused the horses

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Those are what the 2 jacks look like that I have. Guess I will use the hollow one. Neither one of my 59 Plymouths has a jack instruction decal, and as far as I can tell, the underside of the trunk lid and area outside of the seal have never been messed with. At least on one of my cars.

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Here are a couple more pictures of a 59 De Soto and a 59 Chrysler Jack assembly trunk decal from sales on E Bay. Both showing the Jack stand mast stored behind the rear inside tail panel area also near the vertical trunk latch support simailar to the Plymouth.
But both of these jack mast storage area's are on the driver side portion where are Plymouth decal shows a passenger side of the latch support location.
I can't find any area in my Plymouth where a securing screw would keep this assembly pinned to the this rear storage area.
Does any one have this decal method of keeping the assembly from rattling around?

Re: 59 Plymouth Jack
Ok. I have to apologize to everyone on the Goers Jacking instruction decal sheet. I was going thru the #10 catalog for the items I forgot to order on door glass channel rubber for my car. I came across the area where I spotted and ordered the Plymouth Jacking instruction Decal.
It seems that Gary has also never seen this sheet (no wonder the senior fourm guys had not either) Here is his statement in the jacking decal part of the catalog:
"I have never seen,or met anyone who has seen, any other then De Soto. Over 20 years ago I changed DeSoto sheets to make "57-59 Chrysler sheets. Now I have completed the collection".....Not original, but sure looks good!"I will still use the one I have but if you are doing a points car, I would not recommend it. It may take points off for having this decal. (even though it looks factory, it is not)
Sorry for misleading or confusing anyone.
