Hello, I am trying to find technical information on the three speed column shift manual gearbox (with overdrive?). Can anyone tell me about it or point me in the right direction. Thanks

not enough info. i have tech books for '57-'59 model plymouth bought for $60 at local good-guys swap meet. must get both books('57-'58 and the add-on '59). i might be able to tell u vaguely, but i have no scanner 2 copy. overdrive was an option, not very common i don't think(not on the granny 3-speeds anywho).

Hello

I found a service manual on e-bay for a “Torqueflite 727” from 1966. Is this manual also usefull for our Torqueflite? What specific Torqueflite do we have and what must I refere, if I need a rebuild kit?

Hello,
I bought set of 3 books off Ebay awhile back. They are the 1957-58-59 Shop Manuals. Volume Three contains (among other things) information on Transmissions. There is info on the Overdrive as well. What is it you need to know?

Actually I try to identify my (our) 3-speed Torqueflite Transmission because I want to buy some books or a repair manual and I don’t know if the books that are offered on e-bay are for my transmission.

I always read about “Torqueflite 727” but I have no idea if this is our model or a later serial or if it is possible to interchange this transmissions.

Any ideas?

I have always chosen to NOT understand thedetails of transmissions, B blocks, etc. All I know is after 1962, the transmissions went to aluminum housings and the parking brake feature was eliminated.
However, I am now trying to learn the answer to your questions, and I am writing to people who should know. Stay tuned.

Thanks Roger,

This is already a valuable information to me. As far as I remember the transmissions from 62 up also don’t have separate bell housing. Are these 4-speed Transmissions and would they fit on our cars?

I am not a technical person. You should check out a website called www.forwardlook.net. There are many mechanically-wise people there. They put modern engines into older cars... they speak of flex plates and adapters. But if you want a 4-spd, I think you would do best to transplant all the running gear out of a modern 4-spd car into yours.

No problem at all Roger. I'll go ahead and see how I can find it out. The manual I wanted to purchase said 60-up, but as far as I know the 60 and 61 Torqueflite is the same as the 59.

when I was ready to install an engine in my 59, all that was readily available was a '61. The car's original parking brake cable did not fit the 1 transmission..I think I just swapped out the cable or cut something off. I never would open a transmission..too complicated!

our cars have the cast-iron A-466 Torqueflite. I was told to check out the Allpar site.

I don't know where you got those numbers (A-488).
I finally heard from what I consider a knowlegeable source (60 Dart on the FL site), and he warned me that the ALLPAR site has good information, except for the typographical error in the first line, calling it the 488 instead of the 466.
So the question is who should we believe? I guess we need some more input from more people. If I figure out how to send you the Email 60Dart sent me, I will send it on to you.
