313 poly running hot

Hi there,

I just got my 313 poly rebuilt last summer and put about 45 km on it. I noticed that the motor runs hot. Is it maybe because it is still tight? How hot is it supposed to run? I know that the cast engines run hot, I placed a temp gun to the thermostate housing and it read about 200 degrees celcius at idle. Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Kyle

Ouch that is over 392 degrees Farenheit! (I cheated and used a conversion program..)

re-built motors due run hot as they have a lot of friction after rebuild. But I don't think it should be that hot. Now 200 degree F would be in the ball park but 200 degree's C?

I have only done a few engine rebuilds but don't ever recall it being that hot with Coolant in it. Water pump and Thermostat are brand new right?

Mopar Rick better chime in on this one...

He must have mis-typed. Surely he meant Fahrenheit.

I hope so, So many things are possible on a new re-built motor, If the thermostat is stuck close or partially open then the block temp would soar.

But Kyle being Canadian, They would use the degrees C range... :?

Kyle, 200 degrees F. is ok if it is Celcius there is a serious problem. I would be suprised if the engine would run again. there would be no coolant left in the engine. Fresh engines do run hot, but not that hot.

Thanks for all of your help guys! I apoligize, what I meant was farenheit. I just thought that 200 degrees F was too hot. I guess for now I will just drive it and wait until it breaks itself in.

Thanks for the replys!

Glad that turned out well! Had us worried there Kyle!

200 degrees F is fine. Thermostats open at 160 or 180 degrees F so you are good to go!

Kyle, You may have a 192 degree thermostat, just leave it in your engine, you will achieve your best fuel economy as well as engine life.

I'm Canadian, and i NEVER refer to that metric nonsense, especially when it comes to things on old cars!
It was imposed on us in 1976 by that ass of a Prime Minister we had to make us more "European'

Well said Bob! I know your views on it but was guessing on Kyle's use of temperature units.

Hope all is well with you Bob! :)

Hey Dick, a 313 was used in Canadian made Plymouths and Dodges for the Canadian market, its a 318 really with a slightly smaller bore and stroke.
Canadian made 6 cylinders in those days were 251 Cubic inches, as opposed to the 230 used in U.S. versions.
In those versions, the 251 is about 2 inches longer than the 230.

Why? Who the hell knows! All the big 3 did things like that then!
