Hello from Las Vegas

Post by spider89119 »

Hi I am new to this forum. I recently sold my 65 Mustang that I had for 8 years because I want to get something different. I have always admired the styling of the 57-60 Plymouths and Chryslers, particularly the 59's, so I have been focusing my search on those particular vehicles. I am looking for preferably a 2-door V-8 model, but a minty 6 cyl. or 4 door car is a possibility at the right price. If anyone has any tips to share to help me with my search, please throw them my way. I would really appreciate it. Thanks. -Will

Will, welcome aboard! I am not aware of any 59 Plymouth being available at the moment, but others might have a better handle on what is out there. There is a 58 Dodge 4 door for sale in SLC that just popped up on the Foreward Look website. But lets see if we can find you a plymmie first!

Here is that link if you want to check it out. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=0&nid= ... ad=2390138 paste that in your browser.

But lets find you a 59 Plymouth first! :D

Hi Will,

Welcome to this forum! There are some 59 for sale right now and some of them are "nearby":

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/cto/1693044691.html 2dr htp Belvedere in SF Bay area

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ct ... 80682.html Sport Fury in LA

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... &viewitem= 59 rat rod for sale in Vegas

If you are looking further away there are more 59's for sale.

Thanks, guys. I'm not really into the styling of the Dodges. That Belvedere in San Fran. has possibilities. I'm going to email the seller back about that one. I've already emailed the guy about the Fury in Vegas. He sent me some more pics and it looks like it might have more rust than I care to deal with. The sport Fury in LA looks nice, but he's asking about 10,000 more than the max that I can spend right now.

I've found a couple of very nice 6 cylinders for sale, but one has a V-8 price tag, and the other is a 4-door. I haven't been looking long enough to settle for a car that is both a 4-door and a 6 cyl when what I really want is a 2-door V-8. I've only been searching for about a week, so I have to try to be patient and continue looking. If you see anything else out there, keep throwing them my way.

Oops after looking at the ad again I realized I already talked to the guy with the Belvedere near San Fran. The car has some rust/frame rot issues. The price is right for someone who knows how to fix that I guess, but it isn't something I want to deal with.

Right now I don't know of any other 59's for sale within your price range. There are some 4dr and 6 cyl cars for sale but if you like the 2dr V8 you should wait a while and something will come up. I'll let you know when I find one that might be interesting. Are you interested in cars further away from Vegas or do you want one within driving distance?

Thanks, Ron. I'm mainly looking in the West and Southwest states because I can drive there. The closer to home it is, the more willing I am to drive out and look at a questionable car. I am willing to consider cars from anywhere, but If it is a long distance, I would need some sort of guarantee from the seller that I would get my deposit back if the car did not pass an independent inspection to my satisfaction.

A friend of mine who sells classic cars told me that I shouldn't consider anything but a southwest car because the 59 Plymouth has a lot of rust issues, but I think that as long as I can verify before I buy it should be ok to look in other places.

Are you looking for something that is turn-key, or something to restore?

Either depending on the price, but prefer turn-key. No major restoration projects, but if some restoration is required that might be OK.

Will - If you're looking for a nice (affordable) Sport Fury but can't find one, do what I did, go out and buy a 4-door '59. I was looking for a SF for years (no internet then to speak of) and couldn't find a good affordable one so when this 4-door showed up I bought it; and wouldn't you know it, a few months later I got wind of this '59 Sport Fury sitting in a garage up in Northern Minnesota. Went up there and bought it. The guy lost interest in car and was leaving for his winter hibernation in AZ the following weekend and didn't want it sitting in his garage for another winter so he offered me a great deal.
This SF was an original California car (Los Bantos, CA), spent some time in TX and was brought up to MN, so rust was not a problem. Just had a small amount of bondo in rocker panel which I replaced with new metal.
On the other hand, my 4 door, which I look at as the best looking 4-door car out there, is an original Minnesota car and had more rust issues. Especially headlite area. But I got one new fender and might put a cap on other fender.

Anyway the above scenario worked for me :D :D , but your results may differ .

BTW, do you visit the famous Pawn Star store in Vegas? Rick and the boys were up here in Northern Wisconsin last month visiting an Indian Casino signing autographs, etc. Interesting show.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement, guys. I have found a car. It is a 1961 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop. I brought it home today. I love the styling. Those big long fins and all the body contours really are amazing. I can't stop staring at the car. It runs great but will need paint, a turn signal switch, some speedometer work (not sure yet if it's a cable or a rebuild), and lots of other little things. It still looks great even like it is. :D I guess I'll have to find another forum though. Any suggestions?

Well you can stay with us till you find your 59 plymouth as your 2nd Mopar project, but a lot of us spend time on the Forward Look forum which is for any Chrysler product from 55-61 that Virgil Exner was the design head of at Chrysler, Go to www.ForwardLook.net.

Since there is no cost involved in either Forum, do both. :D

Sounds good. Keep in touch with Big M (John Fowlie) he has parts for almost any Forward Look car or can find whole cars too.
