could i install a 74 318 with stock push button transmission

Post by martin59 »

Has anyone ever put a 74 Plymouth 318 LA with the stock 59 plymouth belvedere push button transmission. My bell housing bolts up to it but the pins from the engine don't. Has this ever been done. Is there some kind of adapter kit. The original engine block cracked so im trying to go with what i got. Would i have to put an automatic on the floor. Somebody help please i wanna cruise.

You will need to have an extended flange on the crankshaft, but the LA 318 does not have it, so it will not work.

Hello All

Will the pre-1962 Crank Shaft ( the one with the extended flange ) bolt
to the 1974's Block so the original Torque Converter and Transmission
can be used.

Or ...

Is it easier to use an 1962 - 1965 Transmission/ Torque Convertor to the
1974 LA-318 ???

Loosing the 50'ish pounds by using the LA-318 and the lighter Torque-flight
904 should make an better Power-To-Weight-Ratio .

Martin,

I am currently running a 1976 volare 318 along with a 904 transmission (automatic on a volare column). I installed a 1800-2100- torque converter for more fun behind the slightly built 318. I also used the rear from the Volare Wagon since it was a posi rear. This combination has served me well over the years.

Good luck - with whatever combination you come up with!

Martin, I should have mentioned that I subframed my car with a 76 Volare Premier Station Wagon. I used the motor tans and rear which is an 8 1/4 positraction rear with 3:23 gears along with a perfect fit Road Runner Driveshaft.
